Bon jour, Paris!
Welcome 2017! Having covered the equivalent of a marathon at the Maison & Objet Paris exhibition, I can deduce very clearly that this year's biggest design bias is an expression of individuality and a move to elegance.
It seems that the recent overdose of shabby chic and a period of feeble cross-over design trends have made the design audience yearn for clarity and refinement. Glamour, colour, and whispers of ‘moderne’ peppered in varying degrees, from scant to over the top, are all acceptably swanky. This is vividly expressed in examples such as lighting adorned with terminated crystal points, rose d’ore in geometric furniture, bejewelled colours in furnishings and objets from ethnic to classic. But the flip side of this expression of self-assuredness, is a hankering for natural materials and simplistic finishes, where truth and rawness in materials bring us respite from our 24/7 digital lifestyles.
Alas, truly a departure from whitewash!
