How to Create Design Inspiration
How to Create Design Inspiration

by Ana McCreath

What finishes would I use to design my bedroom? As a designer it is certainly challenging to commit to a design scheme as I see countless materials on a regular basis. But time is ticking and I promised my husband that I would come up with a bedroom design that he will love.

I look at this exercise as I would any of my projects and think objectively about our personalities and how to best translate our tastes to ‘design’. The room is classical in proportions and is very light. it has simple but beautiful original plasterwork, a pair of tall bow windows and a chimney breast (which does not have a fireplace at the moment).

As for our preferences I know that my husband does not care for 'boutique hotel’ and I know that he would like something very individual, comfortable and not a fashion statement. And as for me I would like to create something timeless, special but practical for this house, like a favourite 'Little Black Dress'. So while the builders are getting on with the refurbishments I have been thinking about colours, textures and style.

After rigorously reviewing my shortlist (I do not want to regret my choices), I am happy to anchor the design around a French silk fabric that I am absolutely smitten with. It is Eau de Nil in colour with a cross-stitched trailing embroidery using a combination of brick-red, gold, blue and black. I know this will beautifully complement the furniture and pictures that will be in our bedroom. I also chose this because we will enjoy it whatever the season or time of day.

The paintwork will be two tones of eau de nil which will provide a lovely foil to the gilded frames of our pictures and mirrors. The joinery for the wardrobes will be painted.

Now I have the bones of a good design scheme and I am excited to present it to my husband, and I am sure he will love it. Later I will refine it further and add details to really make it individual.

Are you in the throes of designing your own room? If so a great tip is to consider a favourite item from which you can draw inspiration for your design. This way you can be certain that you are not just following a trend and that you can really let your style come into its own.
